The Schlitz Audubon Nature Center, located in Milwaukee, Wisconsin has taken in a herd of goats on a temporary basis. Approximately 90 goats were recruited for the sole purpose of ridding the property of plants like Buckthorn and Honeysuckle.

Goats have proven themselves to be quite a versatile species.

They are increasingly being employed for landscaping services.

The Schlitz Audubon Nature Center, located in Milwaukee, Wisconsin has taken in a herd of goats on a temporary basis. Approximately 90 goats were recruited for the sole purpose of ridding the property of plants like Buckthorn and Honeysuckle.

The invasive species are similar to weeds and the plants have been preventing birds from nesting on the property’s 185 acres. The director of the nature facility stated “Goats are very hungry critters and they are here feeding on invasive plants, like buckthorn which for us is public enemy number one around here. It’s a plant that doesn’t belong and can spread like wildfire.”

The goats are slated to remain at the center for about 10 days and guests will be able to visit the farm animals. The goats may have to return to the grounds in the future after the initial grazing period is over, as it could take up to five years to exhaust the root supply and kill the plant.
