At least 36 people were killed on Sunday night after a bus plunged roughly 30 meters off a flyover in southern Italy, near the town of Avelino. Reports say the bus was carrying some 50 people, including children, back to Naples after a pilgrimage in the southern region of Campania.
It is unclear what caused the accident, but at least one report says the bus hit several cars when traffic slowed, causing it to smash through a guardrail and over the edge of the flyover. Television footage showed damaged vehicles on the flyover. At least 10 other vehicles were involved in the crash.
The bus came to a stop after falling about 30 meters in an area with thick undergrowth, which later hampered rescue operations.
According to Reuters, a fire department spokesman said "eleven people have been pulled out alive from the stricken coach and taken to hospital, some with serious injuries.
"'The situation is dramatic,' said the fire service spokesman, adding that several other vehicles had also been involved in the accident. Rescue operations are ongoing."
