Militants in Thailand's restive south killed two police border patrol officers in a roadside bomb attack on Thursday afternoon, according to a Bangkok Post report.

The incident happened in Yala province as a convoy of border patrol police officers were escorting a group of teachers.

Militants hiding nearby detonated a bomb as the police travelled along a village road, killing a police sub-lieutenant and a sergeant.

Following the blast, the militants began trading gunfire with the troops.

Resistance to Buddhist rule from Bangkok in the nation's predominantly Muslim southernmost provinces has existed for decades, but began resurfacing violently in early 2004.
