US Airways Flight 777 from Shannon, Ireland was diverted to Philadelphia International Airport in Pennsylvania after a bomb threat was phoned in, according to police and the airline.

The aircraft was carrying 171 passengers and eight crew members on board.

Instead of following usual landing procedure, the Boeing 757 aircraft landed in an isolated part of the airport, and passengers disembarked on staircases before led to waiting buses. Police said passengers and luggage was screened, but authorities found nothing suspicious.

"We were aware of a possible security issue with the flight and out of an abundance of caution taxied the aircraft to a remote location, where it was met by law enforcement and emergency personnel," airline spokesman Andrew Christie said.

Flight 777 went on to land safely without incident at its intended destination around 2 p.m. Eastern time (1800 GMT), according to Christie.

The FBI says it is investigating who called in the threat, and that whomever made the call could face serious charges.
