Swedish women and men caught masturbating in public may escape a criminal record after court ruling: Feel like rubbing one out in plain view of a beach full of families but worried about the consequences? Well, move to Sweden, where a judge just ruled that such behaviour is probably alright.

On June 6, a 65-year-old man enjoying a day on Stockholm's Drevviken beach was feeling frisky, and decided he needed instant relief. He waded into the water dropped his trunks and began masturbating into the water, in view of other beach-goers.

The man, whose name has not been made public, was quickly detained and charged with sexual assault. But the judge in Södertörn District Court acquitted the man, ruling that as his sexual activity had not targeted anyone in particular, thus clearing him of the sexual assault charge.

Even prosecutor Olof Vrethammar agreed, saying that "For this to be a criminal offence it's required that the sexual molestation was directed towards one or more people," adding "I think the court's judgement is reasonable. With that we can conclude that it is okay to masturbate on the beach."

So, Swedes, the next time you're feeling frustrated at the beach go ahead and pleasure yourself in broad daylight without fear of reprisal.
