Two dead in Kansas City light plane crash

Plane crash in Kansas: A man and a woman were killed on August 18 when their single engine light aircraft crashed into a field near Kansas City's Wheeler Downtown Airport.

The Moody single engine aircraft took took off around 3:00 p.m. with one man and one woman on board. The pilot reported reportedly radioed the airport's control tower shortly after take off to report a mechanical problem.

Witnesses reported hearing the plane's engine sputter and seeing the plane turn back toward the runway in an apparent attempt to land.

The aircraft appears to have then gone into a nose-dive before crashing into a grassy area between the Missouri river and the airport, said Kansas City Fire Department spokesman Tye Grant. The aircraft remained mostly structurally intact, he added.

The names of the two occupants have not yet been released. They were both found dead at the scene.
