A New Orleans cop has been suspended without pay for failing to break up a vicious cat fight that was caught on film.

The viral YouTube video clearly shows Cortez Hankton just idling by as two women pound each other, ripping each other's hair out and screaming.

Another police officer struggles in vain to break up two other men fighting each other.

Hankton only steps in to stop another shirtless man who tries to start beating on the women.

The raging popularity of the video brought a quickfall suspension without pay for Hankton, who had served 20 years in the police force.

Hankton's lawyer said Hankton had been unfairly dismissed before any proper investigation was carried out. The lawyer said his client had been radioing for female police officers to come and break up the fight as he felt he was so strong he would cause the girls injury if he stepped in.

However, the police superintendent firmly disagrees.

"No one can watch this two-plus minute film and believe that Officer Hankton did all that he could, including all that he could do physically," Superintendent Ronal Serpas said during a press conference Wednesday afternoon.

"We'll get to the bottom of this," Serpas assured. "We apologize to the people of New Orleans that this kind of video shows that sometimes we're not getting it as well as we think we should."
