Stephen Colbert's Emmy win wrecks Daily Show's winning streak

Views 1

For the last 10 years, The Daily Show winning the Emmy for Outstanding Variety Series has been as reliable as autumn leaves and global warming. But this year held a shock for Daily Show fans, as Jon Stewart was forced to cede the award to his one-time protege, Stephen Colbert.

The 2013 Emmies had the highest ratings the event has seen since 2007, meaning literally dozens of people watched the shocking announcement that Groundhog's day wouldn't be coming for the Daily Show crew this year.

But really, it isn't' much of a stretch to imagine that Colbert appeals to the same academy voters as the Daily Show.

They share the same network, nearly the same time slot, and often cover the same events in both shows in the same day. Colbert even helped Stewart get over an identity crisis upon return from his Jordanian filmmaking adventure.

What is more satisfying is to know that Bill Maher has once again been denied the award, proving, one hopes, that you can't just sit in a circle yammering and call it dialog. Softer underbellies have also been slighted, however.

Jimmys Kimmel and Fallon are doomed to perennial onlooker status as cable's dynamic duo slam them year after year with more scintillating bleeps than the free to air challengers can muster.

But, if the invincible Daily Show can be felled from its mighty perch, even if by an incestuous cousin in the form of the Colbert Report, then maybe the era of cable fake news dominance could be wrapping up.

Can the Colbert Report match the Daily Show's winning streak? With the highest quality writing on TV, it's not impossible.
