Police and army hit in Kashmir attack

Indian security forces carry a wounded colleague from the scene of a shootout at an army base in Kashmir.

Militants were holed up at the base on Thursday after attacking a nearby police station.

Police said they hijacked two vehicles to get from there to the military base.

At least eight people have been killed.

The attack happened as the prime ministers of India and Pakistan were due to meet on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly meeting in New York.

Violence in the disputed Kashmir region was expected to be on the agenda.

Some defence analysts in India say talks now will show India to be soft.
