Kenya: calls for unity after terror attack
Now the shock has sunk in, Kenyan web users are calling for unity following the Somali Islamist terror attack in a Nairobi shopping centre. Kenyan social networkers have been posting under the hashtag #WeAreOne, urging fellow citizens to rally together, and also sending condolences to those who have lost loved ones.
Many have also posted messages praising the security forces for their work in bringing hostages to safety and neutralizing attackers holed up in various corners of Westgate Mall. Local web users have hailed the soldiers and police officers involved as heroes.
And web users have also paid tribute to the many ordinary citizens who have flocked to hospitals or makeshift clinics set up by the Red Cross amongst others, to donate blood for those wounded in the attack.
Ordinary heroes like these women for example who have been preparing and distributing food to security forces and journalists outside the besieged shopping mall.
Columnist Jenny Luesby thinks this wave of solidarity is an encouraging sign for the future. In this article published on the Standard Digital News website, she says she hopes the tragedy will open people’s eyes, and the people of Kenya will stand together united to rebuild the country on new foundations.
