80 years after it was bestowed, the German town of Goslar has begun the process to officially revoke the honorary citizenship it gave to Adolph Hitler.

Technically, his suicide automatically rendered the title inactive, but a determined group wants to proceed with making it official as a symbolic gesture.

There is a segment of the town’s population that thinks they should just live with the mistake made long ago.

Said one resident, "It's like trying to whitewash oneself from something one can't whitewash oneself from.”

A supporter of the move responded that erasing history wasn’t the intention of the proposal, as the honorary citizenship is part of an unchangeable past.

Goslar is not alone in its predicament.

About 4 thousand towns in Germany also made Hitler one of them when the Nazi leader was alive and in power.

Many have since deactivated his status, some doing so almost immediately following the end of World War II and others more recently.

For Goslar to join the ranks of places that both officially and symbolically no longer honor the man, the motion must be confirmed at a council hearing.
