Insurgents including a suicide car bomber attacked the U.S. consulate in the western Afghanistan city of Herat on Friday, police said, and a gun battle was under way.

It was unclear whether insurgents had made it inside the consulate building in relatively peaceful Herat, the main city in Afghanistan's west near the Iranian border.

Some media reported up to seven people had been wounded.
