STORY: U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry arrived at a Geneva hotel on Thursday (September 12) for highly-anticipated talks with his Russian counterpart in an ongoing diplomatic battle to make headway on the crisis in Syria.
Kerry was set to meet Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov later in the day to consider how to implement a Russian proposal to place Syria's chemical weapons arsenal under international control, averting a proposed U.S. strike.
Speaking to students in Kazakhstan on Thursday, Lavrov reportedly said that the world still had a chance for peace in Syria which it must not let slip.
Russia's proposal has prompted President Barack Obama to ask Congress to postpone a vote to authorise a military strike.
