In Jerusalem, reaction is mixed from Israelis to President Barack Obama's speech the night before, when he pledged to explore a Russian proposal to have Syria surrender control of its chemical weapons.

Some are relieved the immediate threat of military action is lifted…

(SOUNDBITE) (English) RESIDENT OF JERUSALEM, TOVA, SAYING:

"I hate war and I think that it's better to hesitate and not to do war immediately"

…others think the diplomatic solution won't stop Syrian President Bashar al-Assad from making more of these weapons…

(SOUNDBITE) (English) RESIDENT OF JERUSALEM, EREZ GOLDMAN, SAYING:

"To manufacture a new stock will take him three or four days anytime he will decide and so therefore I don't see that that's going to be the solution".

…and others, still, say Obama chose an awkward middle path, leaving few Israelis completely satisfied.
