Violence erupted in Brazil's largest city of Sao Paulo on Friday (August 30) as protesters converged on the streets as part of the National Mobilisation and Fight Day, angry at corruption and income inequality in the South American country.

Looting a major bank and national media giant Globo TV, protesters called for a shake up of Brazil's political and economic system.

Protests have been a consistent part of the Brazilian landscape since one million Brazilians took to the streets at the peak of the protests in June, rocking the country's political establishment and undermining President Dilma Rousseff's popularity to the point where her chances of re-election next year are now unclear.

Since the protests, and with elections emerging on the horizon, Rousseff has been under pressure to boost spending, at a time when she is trying to regain credibility as a fiscally responsible leader.
