The 18 year old male accused of participating in the deadly gang rape of a woman in New Delhi last year walks into a juvenile court where a verdict is expected later Saturday.

In December of 2012, a 23 year old woman was raped and tortured with an iron rod by six people on a moving bus in an incident that sparked national and international outrage.

Thousands of people held marches and demonstrations to raise public awareness of the country's lax anti-rape laws.

Changes to the laws have been implemented to reflect harsher punishments, but critics say penalties alone are not deterring sexual offenders.

The teenager on trial, who was 17 at the time of the crime, has pleaded not guilty. If convicted, he faces a maximum of three years in juvenile detention despite police reports that he was the most brutal of all the suspects.
