The number of people from European Union states obtaining German nationality has increased by 19.1%.

With the economy in good shape Germany has been attracting large numbers of young Europeans particularly from southern member states.

Every citizen of the EU can receive German citizenship and retain their original nationality after eight years of residence in Germany.
