The hats, reportedly designed by the students themselves, featured a headband with two blank sheets of paper pinned to the sides.

They were arranged in a way to block any view a sideways glance could have offered.

According to one of the professors, they were created to be worn during an exam in a textiles class and were inspired by a discussion on ethics.

A picture of the class wearing them was posted on a Facebook university alumni page and soon after went viral.

Public outrage ensued, and the university eventually had to hold a press conference to contain the matter.

During their public statement, it was revealed that students weren’t being forced to do anything against their will.

The school also apologized for any distress people may have been caused by their actions.

Use of the hats has been stopped and the picture was taken down from the Facebook page.

One student expressed her anger that so many outsiders judged it unfavorably.
