Most transit buses are plain and boring. Spanish landscape artist, Marc Granen Marc Granen has tried to change that perception by creating green roofs for public transit buses called Phyto Kinetic.

A prototype Phyto Kinetic bus has already been made and it is currently in operation, transporting tourists to and from a nature establishment in Girona, Spain. Granen hopes the radical buses will start appearing in cities across the world.

The aim of the project is to implement some sort of green space in cities to help contribute to the ecosystem. Granen stated “Urban green areas are crucial for photosynthesis, vital for purifying the air we breathe. But much-needed green areas are not always available.”

If each major city had thousands of the Phyto Kinetic buses, the air quality would be considerably cleaner. A 2.75 inch thick lightweight hydroponic foam takes the place of traditional soil. That helps to reduce the entire weight of the mobile rooftop garden.

Condensation from the bus’s air conditioner waters the plants during the summer months, eliminating waste. When the unit is not in use, the plants can be watered by hand.
