Chinese army-designed video game lets players fight Japan
Defend the Diaoyu islands from the Japanese ; this is one of the mission featured on « Glorious Mission One », a war game released to the public on Thursday to mark the 86th anniversary of the founding of China’s People’s Liberation Army. Developed in collaboration with the military, the game which is available for free download, sees players fight virtually alongside Chinese armed forces on a group of islands, known as Diaoyu by China and Senkaku by Japan. Beijing and Tokyo have been in a longstanding and heated dispute over this territory, with both countries claiming sovereignty.
« Glorious Mission » was launched in 2011 and up until now was a simulation program used to train new recruits in the Chinese military and involved moving up the ranks by fighting the American enemy.
The game shows off China’s increasingly modern military equipment; the country has seen a mounting military budget in recent years. It also features a computer generated version of the Liaoning, China’s first aircraft carrier which went into service last year and is a great source of national pride.
The game’s developers say that it will, more than anything, boost military recruitment by making young people understand the importance of defending their country.
