In the worst ever terror attack in the state, 21 blasts rocked the city on July 26, 2008 and left 56 people dead. The blasts, which were carried out by operatives of the Indian Mujahideen (IM), occurred in two phases - first in bustling city markets and later at government hospitals where the victims of the first were rushed for treatment. The explosions killed 56 people the same day and left over 200 injured. The terror strike shook the city administration and the state police and, after the incident, a number of initiatives were rolled out. Some have worked while some others didn't.
