North Korea kicked off the "Arirang" mass game performances on Monday (July 22) in Pyongyang to celebrate its late leaders and the 60th anniversary of the end of the 1950-53 Korean War, which it sees as a victory.
Video provided by North Korea's state news agency KCNA which could not be verified by Reuters showed thousands of people gathering at Mayday stadium for the opening of the Arirang performances, the annual spectacle celebration.
The singing, dancing and gymnastics, all performed with remarkable synchronisation, are a highlight of the North Korean cultural calendar.
This year, performers wearing military uniforms re-enacted battles of the Korean War, ahead of the 60th anniversary of the armistice which divided Korea into North and South.
The Arirang performances began in 2002 and have continued annually since then, with an exception of 2006, when they were cancelled due to severe flooding. They will continue
