Schettino enters plea bargain

Captain Francesco Schettino, who is charged with multiple counts of manslaughter and abandoning ship, arrives at an Italian court.

On Thursday his defence team presented a plea bargain to the judge, saying Schettino was willing to serve a jail sentence of over three years for his part in a cruise liner disaster that killed 32 people.

Schettino was at the helm of the Costa Concordia ship when it ran aground near the Tuscan island of Giglio in January 2012.

The state rejected Schettino's previous offer of a plea bargain in May, but accepted those of five other officials.

(SOUNDBITE) (Italian) VICTIMS' LAWYER, DANIELE BOCCIOLINI, SAYING:

"Quite frankly, to put in for a plea bargain now after all that he [Schettino] said about confronting a trial, to me seems a bit strange. Clearly three years and five months just isn't acceptable, it needs to be something more than that."
