According to a study from the Highway Loss Data Institute, Ford F-250 pick up trucks have become the most stolen vehicle in the United States.
Pick up trucks hold the top five spots of most stolen vehicles, including Chevrolet, GMC and Ford trucks.
Ron Hall, Ford Truck & Commercial Vehicle spokesman said: “Many pickup claims result from the theft of equipment from the truck bed, and that may be the case with some of the F-250 claims. HLDI’s data don’t distinguish theft of vehicle contents or components from theft of a whole vehicle.”
The Cadillac Escalade was the most stolen vehicle for almost ten years, but it has dropped to sixth place on the list according to data from 2010 to 2012.
This might be due to better security systems being used in Cadillac vehicles, or a reduced market for stolen Escalades.
Theft prevention measures like automotive immobilizers that stop hot-wiring were standard in 89 percent of all vehicles sold in the US during 2012.
Another study on vehicle theft from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration found that 73 percent of all motor vehicles that were reported stolen in 2010 were passenger cars.
