On Thursday a Russian court found lawyer Sergei Magnitsky guilty of tax evasion.

Magnitsky's trial is the first time a dead man has been tried in Russia, in a case human rights groups say is politically motivated.

The Kremlin's own human rights council said evidence suggests Magnitsky was beaten to death, but Russian President Vladimir Putin has dismissed the allegations.

No one has been held criminally responsible for Magnitsky's death, underlining the dangers faced by Russians who challenge the authorities.
