The remains of a woman who disappeared 28 years ago were recently found in the basement of a home. Joann Nichols was originally reported missing December 21st, 1985 by her husband who passed away last year.
She was 55 years of age at the time of her disappearance. A contractor was cleaning out a home in Poughkeepsie, New York when he found Nichols’ body hidden behind a false wall in the basement.
Her body had previously been wrapped in a large sheet and plastic bag before being placed inside a container. Her hands had been tied.
Although the investigation into Nichols’ death is ongoing, the medical examiner concluded that she died from a blow to the head. Her late husband is considered the prime suspect in the murder.
A neighbor of the Nichols stated “It's a shock that it actually did happen, but I think deep down we all knew that something like this would eventually happen.” Joann is remembered fondly as a dedicated first grade teacher by all who knew her.
