Millions of Egyptians have taken to the streets in cities across the country to call for the resignation of President Mohamed Morsi on the first anniversary of his inauguration in the largest demonstrations the nation has seen since 2011.
The glow of Mohamed Morsi's election as Egypt's first democratically elected president after the overthrow of Hosni Mubarak a year ago has completely rubbed off. In its place are popular discontent with an economy in collapse and Morsi's concentration of power in the hands of fellow Islamists and censorship of the media. Inflation is rising and the Egyptian pound is in free-fall. The economy has been paralyzed by frequent fuel and electricity shortages and a mass exodus of foreign capital.
Now a new wave of protests is sweeping the country, led by liberals, secularists, Christians and proponents of the old regime. Morsi's supporters have countered with their own massive protests. Hundreds of thousands of Egyptians have turned out to rallies for both sides.
The anti-Morsi protesters are demanding that Morsi resign by Tuesday.
