The San Antonio Zoo is home to many creatures – all beautiful, but some are a little bizarre as well.
On June 18, 2013, a two headed cooter was born at the zoo. Named Thelma and Louise, it will be on display in the Friedrich Aquarium.
For those who are unfamiliar with cooters, they are described as aquatic, hard shelled turtles which can be found in the southeastern United States. Males are typically smaller than females.
According to a spokesperson at the San Antonio Zoo, “At this time, Thelma and Louise are doing well on exhibit and eating with both heads.”
The two faced cooter is able to maneuver around and swim.
Dual headed creatures are relatively uncommon, but the occurrence is seen more with turtles and snakes. Called bicephalic animals, the double faced births result when twin animals do not separate.
