Most outdoor flags are made of nylon or various other fabrics that aren't safe to burn. They are normally buried however you don't have to do that yourself either. As soon as your flag is no longer fit for display, there are several organizations that retire flags correctly. Call your local VFV, Boy and Girl Scout troop, American Legion or Elks club.
