Students, police clash as protests for education reform continue in Chile

STORY: Protesters clashed with police in the early morning hours of Wednesday as a new round of demonstrations calling for education reform began in Chile.

Flaming barricades and roadblocks set up by protesters began appearing on the streets of Santiago overnight and police attempted to clear them by daybreak.

Morning brought renewed clashes with tear gas and water cannons between hooded demonstrators and riot police throughout the city, including the vicinity of the University of Chile's law school.

Police said the situation was brought under control within hours. However, more protests are expected in the afternoon. Authorities say they anticipate Wednesday's demos will lead to another phase of renewed activity among students demanding education reforms.
