Anti-government protests in Bulgaria
For over a week now, thousands of protesters have been lining the streets of Bulgaria on a daily basis, like we see here in the capital Sofia on Saturday, to protest against corruption and demand the resignation of the new three week old cabinet.
The unrest was sparked by the appointment on the 14th June of young MP and media tycoon Delyan Peevski as the country’s national security chief. The decision has since been reversed but this has done little to calm public anger, with protesters slamming politicians for adhering to this oligarchic model of rule by the wealthy.
And so protests continue across Bulgaria and on social networks, largely under the hashtag “dance with me” a play on words of the acronym of the name of the state’s National Security Agency in Bulgarian. And some have taken the slogan quite literally, as we can see in this amateur video footage filmed on the fifth day of protests.
So far the peaceful have been peaceful and good spirited. Countless photos have been posted to social networks showing entire families taking to the streets together to show their disappointment following the highly anticipated elections last month.
