The train glides along the latest advances in magnetic levitation technology, but for the trial the 5 cars had a little help from a maintenance vehicle. The final plan calls for a total 16 carriages, which will transport nearly 1000 people.

Tokyo to Nagoya station will be the first route and will cut commute times over half, dropping them from 90 to 40 minutes.

The 2045 outlook is to extend the service to Osaka.

Japan’s existing trains run up to 199 miles per hour across the country’s 1400 miles of tracks.

Fast as that sounds, in certain circles that may not be such a big deal.

Western Europe, Taiwan, and South Korea all have trains that travel at speeds close to 200 miles per hour. China currently the fastest train with a top speed of 302 miles per hour.
