Japan's coast guard released footage on Friday (May 31) showing an estimated 500 dolphins fleeing at least three killer whales.

The video, filmed from a coast guard patrol vessel off the coast of Nagasaki prefecture in southern Japan on Thursday, captured the dolphin pod "being followed by killer whales and making a life-or-death attempt to escape", Japan Coast Guard's 7th Regional Headquarters said.

The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) estimates there are at least 50,000 killer whales, or Orcas, in the wild, hunting a wide range of prey including fish, marine mammals, sea turtles and cephalopods.
