STORY: Pope Francis on Thursday called for more solidarity in the Church and the society as he presided over Mass and a procession through the streets of Rome.

Marking the Feast of Corpus Christi, Francis held Mass at the Papal Archbasilica of St. John Lateran in central Rome.

Following Mass, the pope attended the Eucharist procession from St. John Lateran to Rome's Basilica of St. Mary Major, a distance of just over 1.5 kilometers.

Unlike his predecessor Pope Benedict XVI, Francis made the distance on foot, walking behind an open-back truck carrying the Blessed Sacrament.

Huge crowds surrounded and followed the pope as he proceeded through the candle-lit streets towards the Basilica of St. Mary Major.
