Officials in Kathmandu, Nepal have declared Wednesday May 29th as the 60th anniversary of the first ascent to the summit of Mt. Everest.

Wreaths were laid on the statue of Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay Sherpa the first people to successfully summit the world's tallest mountain.

File video shows the New Zealand native and his Nepali companion returning to a hero's welcome after their ascent.

Their feat inspired many thousands others to reach the top of Everest in the ensuing years.

More than 100 climbers have completed the challenge in recent days, including 25 year old Arunima Sinha who became the first female amputee to summit the mountain.
